The school leadership and Council of Trustees of Semillas Sociedad Civil is honored to announce that our community’s petition to renew the Anawakalmekak school charter was submitted on Sep 16, 2026. In alignment with our school’s growth over the term of this charter since 2019, we are also honored to announce the school’s new name, the Anawakalmekak Institute for the Next Generation Science of Intergenerational Indigenous Ecocultural Education.

Staying true to our commitment to remain in right relationships with the original Peoples of Tovangaar, and Chief Ya’anna Vera Rocha’s descendants in particular, the decision to pursue reauthorization was voted on and counseled on by the Anawakalmekak parent Community Assembly, Student leadership and by the Gabrielino Shoshone Nations of Southern California’s Tribal Council.

Anawakalmekak Institute for the Next Generation Science of Intergenerational Indigenous Ecocultural Education’s educational framework is built upon a twenty-five year labor of love in the cultivation of a pedagogical ecosystem rich in culture, language and community. Beyond the Indigenous Resurgence Educational framework we embedded in our last charter petition, we have now also deepened our understanding or school redesign through landback learning at Chief Ya’anna Village, Wishtoyo, Pimu and Limu here in Southern California and in our Nahua homelands in Xochimilco, Morelos and Guerrero in ways we could only have dreamed of three decades ago.
