We are honored to host this 3-day Summit of the organizational members of the IEN! Coalition which include California Native Vote Project, Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, Pukúu Cultural Community Services, UCLA American Indian Center, UCLA Human Rights Center, and Anawakalmekak. This will be the first Summit to gather together and engage Indigenous peoples, youth and community members from across Native California and beyond the colonial borders of the U.S. to discuss the unique needs and demands of the IEN! Coalition. This collaborative effort promises to make the event a truly momentous occasion for all.
This Summit is made possible with the funding and support of The California Endowment (TCE) Advancing Indigenous Youth Health, Education, and Power project secured by Anawakalmekak with the support of the Gabrielino Shoshone Nation of Southern California Tribal Council, that aims to support the efforts of Indigenous Education Now! (IEN) Coalition in Los Angeles County. The IEN Coalition strives to increase the visibility and representation of Indigenous student communities statewide in the strategic plans, budgets, and policies of the second-largest school district in the country, LAUSD. Our coalition aims to engage Indigenous peoples and community members from across Native California and beyond the colonial borders of the U.S. given that Los Angeles County iand Indigenous students. This is a critical need that must be addressed, and we are committed to supporting this cause.The three-day convening was called for at the IEN Coalition Retreat in the spring of 2023 to focus on the following key topics:
